Rendering unto Caesar isn’t that difficult in the US Virgin Islands – nor should it be. Anywhere.
For US citizens there is the additional burden of IRS Form 8689 – Allocation of Individual Income Tax to the U.S. Virgin Islands. And because a single form isn’t enough the government is kind enough to also have Publication 570 – Tax Guide for Individuals With Income From U.S. Possessions.
Essentially Form 8689 is used to allocate your share of federal income tax appropriately to the USVI and to the US government. This is to make sure one isn’t paying double. Because taxes interest me about as much as organic chemistry I’ll find a local tax preparer to handle this.
But there it is: one extra form with 45 lines and one publication with 32 pages. I can’t imagine why it takes 32 pages to describe 45 lines, but at least it justifies the 85,000 IRS employees.
